WorldScene Film Festival Features Fascinating Turn of Events on July 29th Curated by Youth in BUILD’s “My Brother’s Keeper” program

The International Children’s Media Center (ICMC) in collaboration with BUILD Chicago presents the WorldScene Virtual Film Festival curated by youth working with the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper program. The WorldScene screening of the “Turn of Events” program will showcase seven powerful films from five countries, including the Academy Award® nominated short Feeling Through and an original documentary produced by the youth participants, Guardian Angel: The Life of Coco.

Exploring powerful themes of diversity, empowerment, and overcoming obstacles, the short films in the WorldScene Festival program, “Turn of Events” were rated, selected, and sequenced by the youth. The young curators also had the exciting opportunity to write and produce their own documentary film, an emotional and inspiring documentary about Heriberto “Coco” Calixto, a 40-year youth mentor at BUILD, who passed away during the Covid pandemic.

The screening includes 7 powerful shorts from 5 countries, featuring 5 Chicago premieres and the chance to see the world premiere of Guardian Angel: The Life of Coco, an inspiring documentary made by youth participants of the program.

Cheer for a boy who defends his dog when neighbors complain in Rocco (Spain). Hold your breath with a class of 9-year olds when their school is suddenly locked down in the suspenseful short Safety (USA). Laugh along with very different folks who suddenly decide they’ve had enough! (Enough, UK). The full list of short films includes: Swing of Change (France), In Other Words (USA), Rocco (Spain), Iron Hands (China/USA), Feeling Through (USA), Enough (UK), Safety (USA), Guardian Angel (USA)
